Non-Transfer of Title

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Alabama. I was in New York and sold my car with the help of my son-in-law back in August. My son-in-law did not do up a bill of sale and forgot to take the tag off the car. I received a notice from the PA Turnpike Commission stating that I had run the the EZ Pass Lane 2 weeks after I sold the car. I've gotten in touch with the tag office and the tag is no longer in my name, but found out that the buyer has not transferred the title so that is still in my name as well. I can not get the title out of my name until they go and register it into theirs. Is there anything I can do so that I am not responsible for what they do with that car?

That's a big thing to forget.

Go back to the buyer and try to get your license plate back.

I contacted the tag office in my county and they have refunded the tag since I no longer own the car. So the people who are driving it now are driving with a tag that is no longer valid. If I could get the person who bought the car to answer his phone or his Facebook messages I would explain to him what he is doing. However, I figure he knows exactly what he is doing, since he drove through the EZ Pass Lane and didn't pay the toll.

If the car hasn't been registered or titled in NY then DMV will be pretty useless. Or should I say more useless than usual.

If the plates get reported as stolen, which at this point is pretty appropriate, then the mystery buyer will set off license plate readers everywhere and will eventually get caught and the car impounded and taken off the road.
