State is NY. A bit of a story to follow but I'll make a summary at the end.
My bachelor's is in community mental health. I didn't have a record aside from a DWI in 2012. I went through a difficult time where I was in an abusive relationship and once when I was trying to leave my exes place he started to physically assault me. This was in early 2015. I kept trying to leave but he kept attacking me so eventually I fought back. He got a concussion and I was arrested and charged with assault. I was only convicted of a harrassment violation but they put an order of protection against me on his behalf.
A year after the fight we decided to hang out again. Me being naive and stupid thought that it would be ok if we were caught for him to say to the police that we were hanging out on his terms. Well we were caught not once but twice and I was charged with violating a court order of protection. These were reduced to a violation of harrassment last week. A third time he showed texts I sent to the cops because he was angry at me and I was charged with violating a court order again. This was reduced to a harassment violation a few months ago.
I don't need to be told that what I did was completely and utterly careless and stupid. I suffer from bipolar disorder and I wasn't medicated and wasn't thinking. I have since been rehabilitated and I'm going through a domestic violence court program that ends in two months
I was offered a job as a mental health technician at a mental health hospital. They require fingerprint background checks through NYS in ordered to be cleared to work with people who have mental illnesses and special needs. I was fingerprinted last Saturday.
I've not heard back yet but I'm not delusional. I don't think I'll get the job. I have no one to blame but myself. But this is what my degree is in and most likely all jobs in the field will require a fingerprint background check through ny. If this doesn't work out it gives me some indication as to whether or not I'll be able to work in the field.
I disclosed on the paperwork my DWI conviction and at the time my pending charges with the violations of OP which afterward were reduced to a violation. With my rap sheet, what are possible career paths I can take if this doesn't work out? Will the assault charge appear even if it was reduced to a harassment violation? How does that work? Some people suggested paralegal or law to me. Will my rap sheet preclude me from working in that field?
TLDR: I want to work in the mental health field and they require fingerprint background checks for NYS. I have a DWI from 2012 and an assault charge that was reduced to a harassment violation early 2015. 3 charges of violating order of protection from 2016 which were reduced to two violations of harrassment. What career path can I take with this rap sheet if I can't be cleared to work with people who have special needs?
