What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? IOWA

HI! Newbie here, I have a question.....
What is the oldest aged adoption that has ever happened?

I am 37.... my Dad has been in my life since I was 2.... My mother is now Deceased, my real Father has "other children" ....

Can I still have my Step Dad legally adopt me at my age.... or should I just
do a name change to include his last name and my married name???

This an across country adoption--- He is in Canada I am in the US.....

Thanks! :)

I don't know about Canadian adoption rules.

However, you are free to change your name if you wish. He is free to treat you like a daughter in any way he wishes.

In the US, the only real advantage to adoption would be if he dies intestate (again, you'll have to check on Canada), but if he simply leaves a properly executed will, that is irrelevant. So what are you trying to achieve?

What I would like to achieve is that eventually---- if his health fails him, I would like him to live closer so that I could look after him as well....

I am thinking if he lives near me permanently, I would have to Sponsor him... since he is Canadian and I am American..... Also what about his health insurance.....

The other thing is he could come visit for a few months at a time but eventually travelling that far may be hard.

I still do think the adoption part would be cool. He would have done it when I was little but I think my Mom worried about what my real Dad would do.

You'd have to sponsor him regardless. However, you are correct that he may have difficulty getting a visa unless he is related to you.

Then he's going to have to ask someone in Canada if he can adopt you.
