What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? MA

We were having some work done on our house and the contractor parked his truck in the cul de sac and accidentally broke the basketball hoop that the neighbor had installed at the edge of their front yard near the road. We did not witness it but the neighbors came over to complain.

We gave them the information for the contractor. Should we offer to pay for the replacement in case the contractor refuses to replace the hoop ? We do not want bad blood but at the same time , we do not have control over the contractor and did not see this happen.

If the contractor does not pay for the damage (he should), it would be neighborly of you to do so (and then seek reimbursement from your contractor).
