We live in New York State. Is there some way to compel my sister to help support our needy and elderly parents? They are both 88 and my mother is legally blind. So far the burden of support has fallen completely on me.

I AM ALWAYS LIABLE

My response:

Unfortunately, no. I am not aware of any law, from any State, "compelling" a child to care for their aged parents. As long as there are no allegations of "Elder Abuse" (either through active acts or a refusal to act), then there's really nothing you can do from a legal standpoint.

Such acts of care are done from the heart, and out of love. If you are finding it difficult to continue the care that is necessary for your parents, you should call upon an Elder agency for things like "Meals on Wheels" and State sponsored visiting nursing assistance in the home. Their tax money went for these programs. Also, if even that is too much, you may want to consider a Retirement Home setting for them.

Good luck to you.
