What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Ohio

I have sole physical custody of my children. My ex has been pitting my son and I against each other. And every time my ex talks to our son, there is always trouble with him.

So, my question is, is it legal to listen in on the phone conversations? Thank you.

If you want a court to slam you for interference. You have no right to monitor the phone calls unless a court has specifically stated in its order that you can monitor the phone calls. How old is your son?

My son is 12.

Get him into counseling. Or it may just be that he is entering puberty and is relating more to dad and you, as the primary parent, are becoming more the "enemy". It may be normal development.

But listening to the calls -- that is a big no no for courts. if dad were saying something wrong -- "let's go pick up hookers", "I am going to take you out drinking whiskey for me this week while we scout drug houses" -- your son could tell you.

Ok, thanks. I was just concerned because of the past physical and verbal abuse that my ex did to our son. I didn't want to do anything that would be wrong.

If your son feels like dad is verbally abusing him on the phone, you are free to tell your son that he can tell his father, "I do not want to hear you berate me dad. Please don't scream at me. Call me back when you calm down. I will talk to you later. Bye." Then your son can hang up the phone.
Now that is for times when dad is abusive and NOT when dad is saying something like, "Son you need to do better in math because i don't accept you getting a C or D or F. Therefore I think you need to grow up and buckle down and take it seriously. Until then you are grounded when you come to my house."
