hey all, we live in eastern washington in the rural spokane county area and have lived in our current home for over 17+ years. about 2years ago our neighbor (who we have never had a problem with in the past) had a new boyfriend move in and he put a up a pretty good sized pig breeding operation, over a 100 chickens running loose, numerous rabbits all in a area of about 200 feet x 200 feet and put it about 170 feet from our home and water well. it has become pure hell ever since. the smell is putrid at best almost 24/7 and constant noise from the breeding and sow's giving birth day and night. there are at times upwards of 50+pigs. he put the whole setup next to our pool and bbq area that have been there for about 10+ years. it has gotten so bad now that we cannot have our windows open ever, or bbq or swim any longer because of the foul smell and who wants to look at pigs about 70 feet away while you eat or swim. friends and family don't come over any longer because of the putrid smell and constant squealing and front row seating to watching pigs get it on. (boom chica waa waa). we tried to talk with them and the boy friend just starts cussing and yelling about how no one is going to tell them what they can do with their property. it has almost come to violence on a few occasions. we have contacted the county and filed complaints because they are in violation but to no avail. they put the whole thing about 40 feet from their own home. he has never cleaned anything so you can imagine the smell. the pigs get out all the time and come onto our land and rip it up and have gotten into our garden of which we don"t use any longer because you have to breath the putrid smell to do anything outside. we cant hang our laundry outide any longer because we live on a open flat area where it is windy/breezy most of the time and it blows in our general direction most of the time and when its warm out the pigs stir up the dried feces and urine in big clouds of dust and it lands on every thing we own. we are trapped in our home all the time. we cant sit in our yard to enjoy a nice evening any longer because in the evening the odor is at its strongest it seems and that is when he feeds the pigs and they get very loud. we hear banging and thumping all night from the pigs in their make shift houses that he built all out of scrap lumber and junk and freebies off of craigslist. we have considered selling our home but we still owe quite a bit on it and we dont think anyone will want to buy a place next to a pig breeding operation and the foul odor and filth that comes along with it. and financially cant afford the move. we cant even come close to affording a lawyer and thought maybe we could try to take them to court somehow for infringing on our right to enjoy our own home? we just dont know what to do any longer.

You will want to contact an attorney for review of your case. You may end up asking the court to issue an injunction.

First off do this so you have seen exactly what your counties ordinances are , learn if your county has regulated the number of pigs / cows livestock according to how many acres the property owner has , then learn if your county/ state has specified hog /pig waste regulations. Learn what your counties fencing ords are when fencing is supposed to contain live stock and lastly if your county zoning department people will not enforce zoning rules then start complaining to your county commissioners and make it clear that you will use tv consumer help desk to ask why county ordinances are not enforced ( let them look bad) very last here consider running for county commissioner.
