Heres our problem. My husband & I are the legal guardians of my cousin. We got the guardianship while he was stationed in Georgia with the Army. We now live in South Carolina. We have all the papers proving it. My cousin was born May 26, 1998. She came to live with me February of 1999 and we became her legal guardians I believe May 1999. Her birth mother didn't name her father on her birth certificate. Her birth mom has not had any contact with her since Christmas Eve of 2000 when she called. Her birth mom told us we could get the guardianship and then adopt her, but near the middle of November of 2000 changed her mind & said we couldn't adopt her. My husband & I would really like to adopt her. She has lived with us every since February of 1999. Please help. What, if anything, can we do? Thanks.

what my parents did.

I have done alot of reading up on adoption, also I was adopted by my stepfather. And this is what they did. If you dont have contact with her or do not know how to get in touch with her you can say that the child has been abandonded, there are 3 things you will need to do send 2 certified letters one to her last known address (telling of your intent to adopt) and one to her last known place of employment and lastly you will need to put an ad in the newspaper telling of your intent to adopt. I would also get a lawyer just to cover your butt. I hope this is of some help. Good Luck!:)
