Hello -- a friend of mine recently was harassed online to an extreme degree. The person in question faked cancer, pretended to be the defendant on multiple websites, caused mental and emotional trauma by faking a coma, a suicide attempt, and cancer as well as faking various mental illnesses and and now has access to my friend's identity by keeping a copy of her driver's license. After my friend publicly addressed what was happening, the person in question got her account suspended. My friend's account is also how she makes her living. Is there any possible case here?

Yes. There is a possible civil action (or two) to consider.

Your friend will want to have the online activities personally reviewed by an attorney in her area to best determine how to proceed.

And your friend should file a complaint with the police. Identity theft is a crime. The police will investigate.

Your friend should also contact the websites in question to request removal of any derogatory/defamatory material. The websites may do this on request (but probably won't without a court order).

Good luck.
