What is the name of your state?Washington

I am the POA for my mother. Is it legal for me to get a credit card in Mom's name and use it for her needs? Thanks ;)

Just remember you may not apply in Mom's name and sign Mom's name without adding your name and that POA on the end.

In addition you will be ask to furnish a copy of the POA.

To apply in her name as if she were applying is fraud and identity theft.

Third parties do NOT have to accept a POA. You just had your incompetent mother remove $20,000.00 from her trust and put that money into her checking account that you write checks using your POA. So just exactly what on earth do you need to attempt to try to acquire a credit card in her name with a POA to buy things for her?

The more questions you post, the more it is obvious that you do NOT know what you are doing regarding your fiduciary responsibilities. Yes, you are receiving a scolding from me. :p

You stated that you have a very good elder law attorney for mom. Make an appointment with that attorney and learn your responsibilities as your mother's fiduciary. If you have not applied to be your mother's Representative Payee yet as previously advised, I suggest you do so.

Thanks BlondiePB and pojo2. Yes I still need to go to the SS office and apply to be Mom's representative payee. I found some great medical stuff to get Mom on the internet. I think they only accept credit cards but I sent them an e-mail to see if they would accept a personal check. Yes I do need to call my lawyer and make an appointment. :p

With the exceptions of Amazon. com and Barnes & Noble, I never make purchases on the internet from a company that is not well established and that does not send catalogs. Just exactly what kinds of things do you need for mom? I can give you a couple of links where you can get catalogs.

Thanks BlondiePB. Mom and I are going to the SS office this morning. :p Anyway, Mom is suppose to wear oxygen all the time but she refuses it most of the time stating "I don't need it." I wanted to get her a pulse oximeter that would prove to Mom that she doesn't have enough oxygen. I am hoping by showing her the low number on the oximeter that she would be more willing to accept the oxygen. I also need general safety stuff such as shower and toilet grab bars etc. Thanks ;)

Good. Now, make an appointment with the attorney and get your butt there. You do not need a credit card for mom. Ask your attorney what you need in addition to knowing your fiduciary reponsibitlies. I know, but I'm not telling.

You're dealing with Alzheimers. Sure you could show her the low number. What will happen is that she will acknowledge it and then that info will disappear from her memory because she will not encode the info in her memory.

Have you seen the documentary movie "The Forgetting"? If not, you should. Check with your local library. They may have a copy that you can check out with a library card. Medical items like this is better to acquire from an actual store, not the internet.
I also need general safety stuff such as shower and toilet grab bars etc.
Here's some links where you can catalogs sent to you.

www.cresthealthcare.com - This is Crest Healthcare Supply. This is good for parts, 3 wheeler walker, bed alarm & sensor (which you should have for mom) and a lot of facility things. This does come in handy for certain items.

www.dynamic-living.com - This is for a variety of things. The super poles (trans poles) are great and easy to install, especially next to the toilet and where mom arises from bed. Do not get any attachments. Mom won't remember to unlock the attachements make them swivel out of the way.

www.drleonards.com - For a variety of things.

Make copies of the order forms from Crest HealthCare Supply and Dynamic living. Home Depot and Lowes carrry grab bars.

Thanks BlondiePB for the great info. :) When I went to the SS office with Mom the lady asked Mom some questions. Mom said "I don't need any help. I can manage my own checks." My request to be Mom's Representative Payee was denied. I told the lady my mother has Alzheimer's. She said she was going to have to talk to the doctor first and would let me know what the doctor says.

If you look back at that thread, you'll see that I did not tell you to take your mother. It's not necessary because SS will contact the beneficary's primary care physician. You will be notified by mail with SS decision. You're welcome for the info.

Hi BlondiePB.
No taking Mom with me was my own "bright idea." Silly me. I thought the SS lady would see how "confused" Mom was and I would be approved instantly. Anyway, I know it will be approved. Mom may have "fooled" the SS lady but I know she won't be able to "fool" her own doctor. :p
