Hello. I am from NJ. I am a woman in a relationship with another woman for over two years. She has a seven month old baby. A few months ago, I did some research. I know that adoption is legal for same sex couples in NJ. I just wanted to know how much it would cost. My estimation of the total cost is nearly 3 thousand dollars. Last year, I made poverty-level wages (not to mention all the bills I need to pay: Car insurance, college loans, credit cards, rent, etc.) and I am currently unemployed to boot. Anyway, not long after my research, my girlfriend dictated while I wrote a small document. Then she signed it. It basically said that if anything were to happen to her (death, incapacitation, etc.) that I would receive her child. Her family doesn't like me, and I'm sure they would do everything in their power to take the child from me. Not that they are great caretakers; they would just do it out of spite. I was just wondering if anyone with legal expertise knows if this small document could be legalized if I mailed it to myself and didn't open it? Like a poor man's copyright? I don't know what else to do. Thanks.

Here in Florida the same sex adoptions are not allowed but there is a do it yourself adoption. Go to your law library and look up all the statutes and rules. Go to staples or a document place and ask them for the proper forms you will need to file and request this adoption. The only cost will be court fees and the fees for your papers and filing fee's. You can never get around those :).

I hope NJ has a do it yourself avalability.
