Hello. On January 11, 2005 my husband took a large bite from an orange popsicle and immediately knew something was wrong. Unfortunately, he had already began to swallow, and described it "like swallowing a handful of jalapeno peppers followed by a handful of rock-salt." He told me something was wrong with the popsicle and to taste it. I took one little lick and it tasted like it had been dipped in gasoline. We put the rest of the popsicle into a zip-lock bag in the freezer. We thought we had better tell the Safeway grocery store where we had purchased it. Within 5 minutes of my husband swallowing the bite of popsicle, he became nauseated and had trouble breathing. We waited a few more minutes and he went from bad to worse. He told me to call 911. The paramedics were at our house in minutes and started working on him. By the time they got there, he was becoming delirious and could not speak or recognize people. He personally knows all of the paramedics (he works with them) and could not recognize them. They took him to the emergency room at a nearby hospital where the physical symptons became more nuerological. He was hallucinating and even took a swing at someone.
I sat with him in the emergency room for 5 hours and I never saw anything like it. He was out of his mind. The doctors were mystified. They sedated him twice and ran blood and urine tests which revealed nothing. After 5 hours the doctors moved him into intensive care and he stayed there for another day. He seemed to be through the worst of it after about 15 hours. But he had a raging headache that just went away this morning. He went into the hospital at 7:30 Pm Tuesday night and came home at noon on Thursday.
The popsicle has been in the hands of the FDA since Jan. 12, along with the rest of the bag we had. They are testing it for toxins, but have not notified us of their results. Not knowing what was in the popsicle has got everyone worried, because we don't know what the long-term effects will be or even if he will have any. I'm probably jumping the gun by writing into this forum, as we don't know what caused my husband to land in the hospital. What I'd like to know is if there is some legal way to speed up the FDA and their testing. Do you think we have a case?
