I am from North Carolina...
We are involved in youth football. We have 2 boys that play. On October 1st, 2005 we were at a game, and our team was winning. In the 4th quarter my wife felt strongly that the coaches should let the kids on 2nd string in the game. She yelled out "PUT IN THE 2ND STRING!". The president of our organization, who also is one of the coaches, yelled back from the sidelines something that we could not hear.
At practice on October 3, 2005 (2 days later) 2 members of the organizations board approached my wife (within earshot of a bunch of parents) and informed her that she was not to yell "negative comments" from the stands again, or they will ban her from practices and games. This would involve a restaining order.
Later that evening the president of the organization approached us again after practice, and informed us of the same information.
Considering that we have been involved (and supportive) of this organization for 3 seasons and have never had any problems like this before, and considering that my wife's comment was not (in our opinion) negative, vulgar or out of line... could this be a violation of her civil rights? Can an organization like this supress her right to yell "PUT IN THE 2ND STRING!"?
By the way... our kids are on the 1st string!
My wife is not the first person that this board has approached about this type of thing.
Is this worth pursuing?
