Grandma fell and broke her hip about a year ago and has been in the Nursing Home ever since. They said she will never come home. Grandpa died a few years ago and apparently his name is still on everything important. Grandma sort of "shut down" after he died.
I have lived with my Grandparents since 1979 and now I am raising my son in their house as well. The Public Guardian has initiated a conservatorship and it seems there is no one else that could serve. I know I can't be bonded. She seems to not have done any type of estate planning...I could not even get her to sign a POA or Durable Health Directive. She also would not cooperate with the Nursing Home either and yet there is no signs of dementia. I think she just wants to die.....
I have a 14 yr old son and this is the only home he has ever known. There is no large amount of money involved....just the new car and the house. I have been working on the house for years and have always kept up the yard. I work during the week on an "as needed" basis and with that money I have supported us and paid the utilities as well as a few of Grandma's small bills. I have never taken any of her money or used her car (even though she gave it to me verbally). Now the Public Guardian says I can't have it at all. They have also said that I MAY be able to pay rent and stay but they were very vague about it.
I don't make enough money to be able to go out and rent an apt. and there is no other family member I can turn to. I would like to know how I could pay them rent and stay where I have always been. I don't even have transportation other than my bicycle. I have a DMV snafu to correct so I can drive legally.
I know I need a lawyer to represent my interests as well as my sons. What I am not sure of is what kind of lawyer and how do I find one that does pro bono work? I need some guidance soon as the next court date is in two weeks.
Would the courts (Public Guardian) really throw my son and I out on the street with no where to go? I have heard a few stories and I am really worried. I have a half sister in No. Calif. that can't help, other than her there are no relatives on Grandma's side except a sister that can not help.
Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank You...
