What is the name of your state? PA

Both of my boys have been on Medical Assistance through the state since they were born. They are now 2 and 3. I know that if the parent the child resides w/ is on welfare, the other parent is required to pay it back to the state. I am wondering if Medical Assistance is considered welfare or not? It is the only thing through the state they recieve. I need to know b/c after I get married in October, we are going to do TPR and Step Parent Adoption. I plan to make a note in the papers that he will not have to pay back all the arreares he owes if he signs. But if he has to pay this back to the state it could cause a problem (2 year olds 3 hosp visits were over $50,000). Thanks for any answers.

As a residence of Pennsylvania myself, Medical Assistance is apart of the Department of Public Welfare. I'm not fully knowledged in the area of ex-spouses having to pay back the state for a tax funded program. There is a program called the CHIP program for children , was this the one they were on perhaps? If so then no, the x-spouse doesnt owe back for this. Its based solely on income. Contact the DPW via website for your question, I'm sure they'll have up to date answers for you.

No CHIP is somethine else. This is Medical ACCESS. Also known as AmeriHealth Mercy, Gateway Health Plan, and one other one. Thank you for the website though. I will try it and see if they can help me.
