What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CO

So i know we have been over this many times quincy lol, but I cant find our discussions. I have not written anything in the past 2 months so i have forgotten, been working on my new site.

Am I allowed to do this. A person tells another news site something and they post it on their website, am I allowed to quote it on my site?

Like "I finish fights" said Joe to ______(the website)

From what I remember in our discussions, the big issue was not to get the quote wrong.

:) I do remember going into this in some depth with you before. You could use the "search" feature at the top and put in "quotes" and something might come up. I don't know - I didn't check.

At any rate, I think I remember saying that when you use a quote that you have not personally heard (ie. in an interview you conducted yourself), then you run the risk of getting the context wrong. Someone can say, for instance, "I hate you" and they can say it with a scowl or a laugh. You miss the context and the expression used, and you can "misquote" even when quoting the exact words said.

You can also run into trouble if there was an interview and it was an exclusive interview - then you are "borrowing" words from another writer's story and the news site might not be pleased.

And there can also be a problem with how much you quote, if your article and the article you are quoting from turn out to be substantially similar.

You run some risks, in other words, if you don't do the interviewing yourself or you are not present when the interview is being done. How much of a risk is anyone's guess.

On the other hand, if the quotes are used in a bulletin released to the news media (an AP post, say) then you are free to use the material from the bulletin, including quotes, as long as you create your own story from the facts and do not reprint the bulletin verbatim.

Edit to add: Actually, Code321, if you use the search feature, and search for threads started by you, look for the other thread you started titled "quotes". We really did cover this thoroughly. And the bonus is that seniorjudge, in that thread, actually offered up a couple FREE quotes for you to use!! (not sure how well they would work in a sports story, however)

Ok thanks, Yea i didn't run a search cause it seemed to run slow when i was. I could not even get one done. So I went flicking through pages and the pages ended at 4, so i thought maybe it was cleaned out.

But thanks again
