Washington State - In February 2006, I was hired as a musician to perform a show at a local nightclub. I was hired through a booking agent, and the club owners had not previously seen any of my performances. During a break in the show, I approached the bar to ask for a glass of water. The employees of the establishment refused to serve me, and made insinuations that it was because of my race. I sent a letter to the owners of the club to file a complaint and ask for an apology, but received no response. I would like to see if it is possible to pursue legal action against them.

What proof do you have that it is because of your race? What was said? What race are you? What type of drink were you asking for? More details. Just because you THINK it was racial does not mean that it was.

Mybe they meant short people, people with brown eyes, people with ugly shirts, etc. Did you ask what they meant when they said it?

Really, it isn't funny, if you were in fact insulted because of your race. But based on what you posted here, there is very little that you can do other than to complain to the management, and not accept any further jobs there.

Actually I can imagine a bartender being a bit "funny" and saying something like that as a joke -- because if you drink water you are not going to be tipping. If you don't tip he doesn't earn money, etcetera and so forth. So it could have mean people who drink water as a joke and it fell flat.
