Re: Discrimination????

What is the name of your state? Virginia

I've been working for the same company for the last 8 years. I've never been written up and always received good annual review but there's one main problem. About a year ago 3 collegues that I worked with for last 8 years together with same type of work description has been promoted to Associate Directors while my position was demoted to Associate Manager from Systems Manager. I had the toughest time tryng to understand why this happend. By the way, Associate Director is three grades hire than Associate Manager. To add salt to the wound, in May of this year, two more employee just got hired and one of them has the same title as I do and other has the regular manager title. What's funny is that I'm training one of them and even delegate some task to one of them. What's even worse is that a another collegue who was hired to replace my old position 2 years ago now has the same title as I do!

I've spoken with my director about this issue and he has showed some concerns and he has made effort to correct my situation by contacting HR department. It's been 6 months and still no reply from the HR about it. I feel as if I've been deeply discrimnated against here at my current company. I hate to say that this is a race issue but I am a minorty and everyone that has been promoted or newly hired is not. I've written 4 emails to my director since and every time the response is we are working on it but nothing is being done. I'm really discouraged and very upset and thinking about leaving the company.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks.

Nobody here would know why you haven't been promoted and whether your race is an issue. If you feel it is and your employer has not responded to your complaint/inquiries, then you're free to file a complaint of prohibited discrimination with your State's equal rights division or the federal EEOC.

Re: Discrimination

Thanks for your reply beth3.

Even if i "do" file a complaint with the authority and issue gets resolved, I'll probably have to look over my shoulder if I decide to stay since I went "against" the company. That is something I like to avoid. Is there any other ways to get on the the right channel to voice my dilemma without stirring up the hornet's nest? I work for a nationally recognized company with over 1000 employees.

You can try to resolve the situation internally with HR. Corporate HR, if need be. Contact them yourself, not through your manager.

Note that legally the employer has no obligation to promote you.

Thanks for your advice cbg.

I've asked my boss the same question of going to corporate HR but he promised me several times that he'll take care of himself through talking with HR. I'm just tired of waiting for answers and if the company do not see value in a long time employee, it's time for me to move on. Thanks again.
