I got a ticket for allegedly passing a stopped school bus in a very small town in Arkansas while transferring my car (interstate tags) from New York to Texas. My ticket summoned me to court 44 days after the ticket was written. I do not mind attending, however, I can't get free from work. I'd have to drive 6 hours there for a 6pm appearance and and 6 hours back. The fine was $500 (would go homeless if I had to pay this).

I just don't know what to do. I am 26 and it is my first and only offense in any state. Their town is so small, they have no website where I can check if I can do traffic school here in Texas and send the info to them. Time is running out and I am no further along in what to do as I was a month and a half ago! I heard that I can get a "continuance"? What is this and how do I get one?

Please help me!

I am a law school graduate. What I offer is mere information, not to be construed as forming an attorney client relationship.

It extends the time you have to appear in court. To get it, contact the clerk of the court and explain your situation, be nice and get the continuance in writing (ask them to fax you confirmation).
