What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NJ

I have a tenant that just moved out and now is asking me for receipts for all the
rent payments she made. I don't have all the dates that she paid, so I'm just going to give her a letter stating all rent was paid on time. But my question is...

Is it required, or common practice, to give a receipt to the tenant for payment of monthly rent even when that don't ask for a receipt?... I just assumed their canceled check would act as their receipt.

Thanks

If your tenant has paid rent by check, the cancelled checks are her "receipts". If her bank no longer sends these cancelled checks back to her, she can still go online and receive this documentation.

There is no law that "requires" additional receipts if tenants pay with a check.

I have two tenants who pay rent with cash. I always provide them with a written receipt for such but do not do this with tenants who pay by check, money order, etc..

Tell your tenant that tour time is valuable, but for a fee you would be able to provide the aditional service. P.S, you should have all receipts if only to produce evidence of rent in the event of an audit.
