Dear forum,

I would like to ask for advice on my legal question:
I (German citizen, residing in WA state) plan to marry my Chinese girlfriend. We both have permanent resident status for the US. Which marriage laws of which country will apply for us? Does this depend on the country where the marriage will be registered? If we decide to marry in Germany how does the US recognize the marriage?

Thanks for your help!

Providing the marriage was entered into legally in the country you marry, then the US will recognize that marriage providing it does not break any basic US laws. ie, a homesexual marriage in the netherlands (although legal) will not be recognized in the US.

Make sure the marriage does not effect your immigration status before you leave the US.
