I worked on 100% commission until recently, when I quit my job on September 30, 1999. I have not yet received monies owed to me from my former company. I contacted the company by letter with a list of overdue monies as well as a request of my personnel file on 12/9/99. I recieved my file 5 days letter, but there was no reference to the monies owed. Not surprisingly, I have no money to hire a lawyer, though I have heard that I can sue for up to 3x what the company owes me. All of the money owed to me is now over 90 days, and in some cases, 120 days overdue. Are there any public channels I should try before I talk with a lawyer?

The state labor department may be able to help and small claims courts are available. But often a letter from a lawyer would do the trick -- and the lawyer may get his or her fes paid by the other side if the amounts are big enough. (Warning -- 8 out of 10 times they'll claim you owed them something and they "offset" what you owed....)
