So I've been working at a construction company for a couple of weeks. I liked the job because it was paying pretty descent. But they are like 4 black guys and 20 white people. And I'm black which was very weird to me. So 3 days ago my supervisor found out that I was Muslim and today he tells me that I have to shave my beard bald so I could be wearing a respirator and it could fit tight. I told him that I am Muslim and I can't shave my beard bald and I could get a respirator that will be tight on my beard and he said no. I even offered to trim my beard low so it could fit. And he said if i can't cut it bald that he will let me go. I don't understand. People that have been working there told me that they never enforced this rule before. Osha regulation for a respirator isOSHA*does*not ban*beards*per se, but it*doesrequire employers to ensure that*bearded employees*who are required to*wear*tight-fitting facepieces trim their*beards*so that they do not interfere with the sealing surface of the*respirator*or are not so large that theycould*interfere with valve function. Do y'all think I have a case.

Are your birth parents black? If so I can’t understsnd why you being black would seem weird to you. I would think it would be weird if your parents were white and you black

There are no respirators rated to be used with a beard. They have to be air tight. The facial hair prevents that. At best you would have to shave your face where the respirator would seal against your face, which is actually pretty much the entire area where a beard would grow. Is it allowable in your religion to do that? It would also have to be cropped so as to not interfere with the function of the respirator (valves cannot be obstructed). Can you do that within your religion.

If you were not willing to do what is required to be able to properly use safety gear then this is not a religious discrimination issue. It is you being unwilling (yes, I understand you are going to say unable due to your religious tenets) to comply with what is required to follow legally imposed safety rules.

So no, I don’t believe you have a case for anything there.
