Call ICE (only a quick google search away!).

And no. In fact, the likelihood is that unless the person has committed a crime, nothing will happen.

By the way - how do you know this person is illegal? Do you understand that they could be in any number of adjustment proceedings?

In other words, you have no proof of any wrongdoing whatsoever.

Call ICE.

And if you think your MINOR sister has been abused, call the police and/or CPS.

Do you realize that you may also be guilty of committing a crime?

Think very carefully here, before you act out of some sense of vengeance.

How old is your little sister?

If he tells the officials who detain him for being here illegally, you're looking at prison for the tax fraud.

There might not be any tax fraud. You cannot use a false SS number to file a tax return without it being rejected. You can use a ITIN number, which is what the IRS expects illegal immigrants to do. Its a way to ensure that they pay US taxes on the income they earn. An ITIN number looks like an SSN, but has a special sequence of numbers.

Come on, you know better than that.

I am sorry Dave but I am 100% correct on this one. If the names and SS numbers do not match, it gets rejected....and if you are unware of the usage(encouraged by the IRS) of ITIN numbers for illegal immigrants to file and pay taxes, then you are very out of date.

Yes, they use false SSNs with the employers, but another purpose for the ITIN filings is to match up those W2s and remove them from the incorrect social.

I live in San Diego. I think I have a pretty good idea of what's going on.

That you live in San Diego is completely irrelevant. There are large populations of illegal immigrants in every major urban area.

So what exactly are you disagreeing about? What exactly was incorrect about my statements?

You can roll your eyes all you want, but unless you can demonstrate that I am wrong, you should back off.

Don't get out much do you? That you can't even acknowledge why it is different here than "every major urban area" is telling.

I don't have to prove a darned thing. One of my former baseball teammates works for Border Patrol. I've attended ICE seminars for tax professionals. I know how it works, thank you very much.

You want to know what is wrong with your statement? Your complete unwavering belief that it was an ITIN on the return.

How I'm reading this is that you're saying it's entirely possible that this person used a completely fake ID in order to file taxes - including a name AND the associated SSN.

That would be correct - it's absolutely a possibility.

(Of course, I could be reading you wrong, too :o )

No, you read it right. One of professional acquaintances has dealt with identity fraud on a tax return where someone else filed the return first. If you have a stolen SSN, it stands to reason you have the name that goes with it. There are enough employers who don't do required identity verification checks who will issue W-2s to those names and socials and then the criminalien files a 1040 based on those W-2s. The person who's idendity was stolen is then in for a nasty surprise especially if they e-file.
