What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Indiana

I've got a question about child's benefits if a parent is eventually found disabled and is awarded back pay SSDI, also getting a back pay check as the representative payee for the minor child. As y'all know, it can sometimes take a long time before a case gets approved, resulting in a lump sum back pay check.

Can the funds from the back pay check be used to cover expenses for the child that occurred prior to the actual receipt of the check, for the period while the parent was disabled and eligible for benefits, or are the funds only to be used for present and future expenses of the child?

Thanks!

The benefits can be used for back expenses.

The only thing SSA wants to know about what the payee is doing with those funds is if they are going into a savings account. For some reason, the SSA thinks that it is really important. But they didn't care what I did with any of the moneys I received; it could be all spent on eBay and SSA wouldn't care at all. ;)
