If a mortgage is in the name of a married couple (needed both incomes to qualify), and one spouse leaves the household, is the departing spouse still responsible to pay a share of that mortgage even though that person is no longer living in the house?

Whoever's name is on the mortage is obligated to pay it. If more than one person is on it, each are individually liable for repayment, irrespective of where the other is, what they do for a living, what color undershorts they wear, etc.

Meaning, the bank will certainly come looking for you if you stop paying, if only to serve the foreclosure notice.
