My response:

If the principle is male, and the student is female, then yes.

But, if they're the same sex, that would just be tacky.

It depends on the circumstances. But I do not believe that NY law requires a search be conducted in the presence of a parent since the school acts in the parents' stead while the student is there.

If the search is otherwise lawful, I do not believe there is any legal requirement for a parent to be there.
