What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Ny
At a recent meeting, a member brought up a motion that would have changed a by-law. During the debate, the president said the motion would require 2/3 vote for the motion to be brought up and voted on in the next meeting so that notices can be sent out. Out of the approximately 40 members there, 26 voted to bring the motion up at the next meeting so the notices could be sent out and 12 voted against the motion. I don't know a lot about Robert's rules and the Internet searches I've done are confusing. The union constitution does not mention anything about 2/3 voting and says that Robert's Rules is to be followed when the constitution does not cover a part. My question is this, if quorum was established, and out of the members present, more than 2/3 voted to change the by-law, does it still have to be debated and voted on during the next meeting?, or did it pass at this one and someone was misinformed? I have bought an 11th edition book of Robert's Rules and am trying to go through it, so of someone could answer my question and/or let me know where to look in the book for answers, I'd be very thankful.
