To begin, my partner and I live in Pennsylvania. She is pregnant with our first child, conceived using anonymous donor sperm.

I'm in the middle of filling out paperwork to adopt the baby (once he's born, of course), and I need some help that I don't necessarily want to ask my lawyer about because it could complicate matters. Here is my question:

On one of the lines, I have to fill in "number of years in committed relationship" and "since month and year." Well, my partner and I were together from 2001 to 2006, broke up, and got back together in 2009. If we add the time together, it has been about 6.5 years, but how should we document that? We don't want to seem unstable by stating that we weren't together for 3 years, but we also don't want to pretend like we've only been together for 1.5 years. Do we lie and say that we've been together since June of 2001?

Thank you in advance for your advice.

Your attorney is only working to get the results you desire but making sure its done in a legal manner. Your attorney is not the judge!! But it is always important to tell the truth lest you be charged with perjury.. (criminal offense)

Just explain the issue to your lawyer and your lawyer will tell what you NEED to write. Either way its a small part of the process that you probably wont be judged on near as much as your fearing. My husband and I havent been married a year yet and he's adopting my son... believe it or not courts really just want the child to be loved and cared for properly and lawyers are only trying to get you the end result you want (as long as they get your money too...) Good Luck!!
