What is the name of your state? California

I have placed security cameras inside my condo, this is for safety from recent troubles. I have it in my living room but it also captures some of the patio. I am a renter and aware that HOA rules state that I cannot have anything attached outside on my patio/recording because it is considered a "common area" and someone can sue. If my camera is still capturing my patio, but it is inside the home, will anyone be able to sue on those grounds or am I safe because it is inside my home? My landlord is aware, understands is okay with me doing this. I also talked to the property manager stating I will have cameras inside my home.

Any help is appreciated

Thank you

It should be okay.

What exactly are you capturing with your camera?

Here is a link to California's recording laws: http://www.dmlp.org/legal-guide/california-recording-law

Again, there should be no problem if an indoor surveillance camera picks up activities on your patio. What is the primary concern with recordings is the audio portion - and with video, you should not have cameras where people have a reasonable expectation of privacy (e.g., focused on what is going on inside a neighboring home or in bathrooms/bedrooms).

Good luck with your neighbor.

Some people put shades or blinders on cameras so they do not Pick up views of private areas like bath or bedrooms of other units ....use some common sense ?

It sounds as if the complaint had more to do with the placement of the camera (attached to the outside of the condo).

If that was the only reason for the complaint, an indoor camera should nicely eliminate that problem. With indoor cameras there can be other privacy issues, though, and what those are, are outlined in the recording laws linked to previously.
