I am selling a car and the registration is expired. Does the registration need to be updated before I can legally sell it?

I don't think so. However, as long as it remains unregistered, any prospective buyer won't be able to test drive the vehicle before purchasing, nor drive it away from your property until it is properly and legally registered without risk to you.

Unless and until that vehicle is registered, YOU would be held responsible for it's illegal operation on the roads. That could place a huge burden on a new buyer, and could ultimately affect your ability to sell the vehicle.
