Separate Visits for the Children - Is this good?

My ex wants to begin having separate visits with the kids ocassionally in the evening so he can focus on each child. I think this is a good idea, but I'm worried the kids are not quite old enough to understand why one can go and the other can't. They are two little girls, one is 5 and the other is 4.

They just started seeing their father every other weekend, from Friday afternoon to Sunday evening. He is free to visit them during the day at daycare, and could take them to lunch in lieu of making an 'event' out of the visit in the evening.

Hope someone has some experience with this. I'm going to contact a child psychologist for another opinion.

My suggestion would be to try it out and see how it works. If it works and the children are happy with it...great. If not, try again in a year.
