My sister lives in Anchorage Alaska and back in May hired a contractor for 20,000.00 to redo her kitchen. A week or so ago he came in one day and started tearing apart the kitchen to prepare for renovation. He never came back. One of his workers showed up a few days later and explained to my sister that his employer closed his business doors the day before and filed for bankruptcy. What can my sister do legally to get her money back from this guy. she put the payment on her credit card and visa is going to see what they can do since the job was never done/completed all he did was come in and tear her kitchen apart. Some products for the kitchen were never ordered and some were never delivered. She had to go to the docks and pay 900 dollars to get her cabinets. Luckily one of his employees, who hasn't even been paid supposedly in the last 2 months is being kind enough to do the job for a couple thousand. Is there any way to get her money back from this guy since he's filed for bankruptcy and obviously has all ready taken the money? What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?Alaska

If he has in fact filed for bankruptcy (she needs to confirm by calling the bankruptcy court), then there really isn't much she can do directly. She just has to get in line with all of the other unsecured creditors.

That might be her only 'saving grace'. She needs to contact the credit card company's in WRITING and file a dispute NOW. Don't wait.

Do NOT let him do anything without her DOCUMENTING the current condition of the work. The minute that the cabinets are done (or any other work by others), unless she has LOTS of pictures, preferably WITH video showing the condition as HE left it.... she will lose a lot of her claim against the first contractor.

Has all ready taken the money?
Please, PLEASE don't tell us that she paid him in full before he even started!!! No one can be that naive.
