What is the name of your state?Pennsylvania. I am not sure if this is the appropriate place to ask this, but does anyone know how to find out the names and addresses of registered sex offenders in my immediate area? I am not a paranoid person, just a curious one who is, of course, careful with my family, and heard a story on television about how most people would be surprised to find out "who lives nearby". I tried to look this up on the internet but was unsuccessful, and any help would be greatly appreciate. L.

I checked the above site, but to find out the offender's information you have to register for $19.95.

BE ADVISED that not all sex offenders are classified as sexually violent predators.

In Georgia we can go to the GBI.gov website and there is a search for sex offenders by name or zip code. Maybe there is the same in PA.

You automatically think you are safe because you know where a person lives and that you know what crime he was "convicted" of. Let me tell you, there are ALOT of people who are getting overturned convictions because of FALSE ALLEGATIONS. For example:

That includes the jury foreman and judge in his trial, appellate attorneys and investigators and even the findings of a lie detector. The mother of the victim also disputes the verdict.
Most of all, the victim herself -- now a 17-year-old Houston-area student -- swears she tried to describe the real rapist to authorities but was harangued and manipulated into falsely accusing an innocent man.

If you are concerned for your kids, then talk to them and teach them how, when, and why to say "No!" Make certain they know when something is not right and how to get out of a situation when they may be at risk.
The man/woman whose picture is on the internet has already been convicted. He/she is very possibly trying to live a normal life now and may not be dangerous at all. That person is probably in therapy and may be totally safe.
BUT, the family member, freind, or neighbor who has not been caught, and whose face is not posted on the internet, may possibly be very dangerous to your children. That is a fact. It is a very tiny percentage of sex offenders that get told on. Especially now with all the public humiliation going on. Would a teenage girl/boy turn in their uncle/aunt for touching them inappropriately when they know what the results would be? They would be more likely to if they felt it may do some good for the person they possibly love very much. Don't you think?
For every convicted sex offender in your neighborhood that is on the website, there are at least 5 who are actively offending and have not been caught in the same area. How 'bout that? (Maybe a lot more than that actually.)
Should you teach your kids to be paranoid? No, but you NEED to teach them to be intelligent. As a society we need to wake up to the fact that media sensationalism and hypocritical finger pointing might be making our streets less safe afterall.

One of the guys took her up on it. She later told the police that she had been raped. He was charged with rape, convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison. The other guy even testified on his behalf, but it didn't help. He eventually got out of prison, but this ruined his whole life. He would be one of those people who would be required to register as a sex offender, and was actually one of the nicest people you would ever hope to meet. All it took was one false statement...

Get Real
I am sick and tired of people trying to protect child molesters. The reason I can't find out if any live in my area is exactly because of that. I feel very badly for anyone falsely convicted of any crime, but not at the expense of my peace of mind and my children's safety. If you tell me that a convicted molester lives across the street but he/she is 'most likely' innocent, they still will not be allowed near my children. If you have a problem with that, or the fact that I want to find out this information, so be it. I will educate my children about how to keep themselves safe, but I will also educate myself. Shame on anyone who thinks there is something wrong with this. Also, I do not!, do not! believe that a person who sexually assaults a child can be 'rehabilitated' and considered safe. Thanks, 2k2dggr

OK, this is easy. Yes there are some living in your area. That is statistically proven. Most of them have not been told on or caught, if any have, that is. So what now? Gonna move? Well, everywhere you go on this planet you will run into some.
Don't kid yourself that if a website does not point at any convicted sex offenders on your block that you are in an area where there are no child molestors.
Did you know that about 20% of child molestors are women, but only 2% of convicted child molestors are women?
So maybe that lady across the street who your kids adore is getting off on your kiddies.
I understand your concern and disgust.
But you need to wake up and face life full on with knowledge and wisdom. Your kids are exposed to dangers nearly every second of their lives. Poisons, traffic, drugs, child molestors (who most likely are family members or your trusted friends), biting dogs, electricity, bath tubs, etc. What about the convicted murdered who does not have to register and have his face on a website? What about the guy who sells crack to kids and doesn't have to be on a website? Teach your kids to respect themselves, and to be able to know right from wrong. Teach them how to think intelligently. Let them know they can trust you to be able to come to you with any question or problem.
Let me ask, of the things you have done in your life that you are ashamed of, do you have an uncontrollable desire to do them again? Would you say you can never be rehabilitated?
If you say you have never done anything you are ashamed of, you are a liar and should be ashamed of yourself.
