What is the name of your state?Maryland

My boyfriend's ex had a lawyer do her paperwork for their divorce. They originally agreed to do everything without a lawyer because neither of them had the money and they have no property together. The only things to be agreed on is child custody, which he is willing to give her sole physical and joint legal with the stipulation that he must have a say in if they can move out of state...and also the amount of child support which we know will most likely be determined by the court anyway. My question is this:

Since she has retained this lawyer to file her papers, should he get a lawyer also? She keeps telling him he does not need one, but she's not very trust worthy. We do not have the money to pay for one if it is not something that is a must have. We also do not want him to have anything jump out and bite him so to speak at court.

if he wants his rights protected then YES he needs a lawyer, or at least needs to do some extensive research on his own and not sign anything he is not totally comfortable with. remember who is paying the current lawyer, that is whose interests he is working for...

His ex claims the lawyer is not going to court with her...that she just did the paperwork and the filing. Is that a normal process? I thought once you retained a lawyer they stuck it all the way through.

We should have the papers soon. Should we just read them over really caefully and take it from there???

Thanks for your help :)

it does not matter if the lawyer is not going into the court with her, he has drafted the paperwork as much as he can to his clients benefit- which is his job.
