Was the lawyer for my ex right?

What is the name of your state? GA
I read a response IAAL made regarding spousal support in MD. The poster asked if he could stop paying alimony to his exwife b/c she was living with her new boyfriend. IAAL said no.

My question: My first marriage (in 1997) ended after only 4 months. My ex-husband volunteered to make 12 months of car payments since he didn't have a car during our marriage, and rode with me everywhere. He had this written into the divorce agreement. There were no children from the marriage.

Toward the end of that 12 month time, I met my present husband. When my ex-husband found out I was dating again (small town gossip), his attorney wrote me a letter. She stated that the monthly support should not be used to "finance my latest consort."
!!!
The support payments always went to the car (as my checkbook records of the time would show).

My question: did the lawyer have any legal grounds for saying that, or was she just helping my ex get my goat? My ex claimed he didn't know his lawyer would write that letter.

I say, "Yeah right."

Anyway. It's all water under the bridge, but my husband and I (married almost 5 years now!) were just wondering about the legality of that lawyer letter. The Maryland poster reminded me of the incident.

Thanks for your time!

the lawyer had a right to ask, and to even coerce, since the terms of alimony or payment is for YOUR needs, and when you have someone else to help support your needs, then its only fair for you to make a choice between the two.

If it is illegal for a landlord to collect rent from two different tenants, why shouldnt it be illegal for an ex spouse to collect money from the ex and the new live-in "spouse" as well?

Thanks

Thanks Michael.

I see what you're saying. I can understand how an attorney wouldn't want his client's ex-spouse to double-dip financially (money from the exhusband and new boyfriend).

that didn't happen in my case though. Like I said, checkbook records from 1997 show that the support pymts were used for the car loan.

I didn't accept any money from boyfriend (now husband) until we were married, and likewise, I didn't add him to any policies or anything until we married.

Thanks for your time!
