My husband left me after 21 years of marriage. he is a Vietnam vet' receiving support from the VA, I work fulltime but live below the poverty line since he left me. I am not sure how to get him to help me financially. I don't want to cause him problems but it seems that without his help I cannot afford to live.

You can file for divorce and ask for spousal maintenance, which could be ordered temporarily (while the divorce is pending) or on a more long-term basis or not at all.

If you are able to work and the court doesn't give you maintenance, then an additional a part-time job is probably in order here to get you above the poverty level.

Best of luck to you.
