My Fiance' is divoced 2+ years. While married his (ex)wife held a Sears Credit card in which he was added on as a "cardholder". Now, 3 years later, she is telling him that Sears will be contacting him for payment of an extremely past due balance. Who is responsible for payment of this account? Can Sears legally come after HIM for payment of this debt?

As long as he was just a "card holder" and not a "co-applicant" and this was not a "joint account". Also as long as the divorce dicree states that she would retain the account and would be responsible for all monies owed. However if it is stated in the divorce that he was to pay part or all of the existing balance then she can come after him for the amount that he was supposed to pay, but it is still up to her to pay Sears if the account is in her name.
