What is the name of your state? Colorado
Is there not a statute of limitations in Colorado? I always thought it ws 7 years, but I recently met a woman who just finished 20 days in jail for failure to comply on a traffic conviction 9 years ago.
If there are limitations, does it vary by the type of case?

I would presume since your friend failed to follow the courts orders, there was a warrant issued for her arrest. A warrant is forever unless the courts rescind it or it is served, no SOL makes it out dated. She was already convicted so the SOL's do not apply.
The SOL is for the original charges to be brought against a person.

There are other SOL's involving debts. adverse possession of land and many other things. They all differ.

Thank You. That makes sense. Yes, she did have a warrant for failure to comply. She failed to finish her community service on a driving under restraint charge.
Are there different statutes of limitations on civil than there are on criminal or traffic and are there different limitations on misdemeanor than on felony?

If you are speaking of SOL prior to charges being filed, yes, they vary, usually based upon the degree of the crime.

Things like murder and other serious felonies often have no SOL limits.
