What is the name of your state? Alabama. This is my situation. Earlier this month, I loaned some money to the man who was doing my yards (a big mistake). To make a long story short, I had reason to put a stop payment on the check. A couple of days after putting the stop payment, he managed to get it cashed at a small local grocery store. Now a check agency and the grocery store are after me, and this man, to make good on this check. The grocery store professes to have gotten in touch with the man and he professed not to have the money and refuses to pay it back. This grocery store called me yesterday and mentioned if I didn't pay up, they'd have to contact the D. A. That threw me, so I verbally agreed, but a mutual acquaintance of me and my former yardman is going to talk to him about paying back the money. I don't feel liable for this, should I see a lawyer?
