Minnesota ...

Okay, first off, yes, I understand this is my debt, and I accept that responsibility. Secondly, I understand I should've taken care of it before* it went into default, Thirdly - I'm done making excuses - let's call this irresponsibility, or stupidity, or whatever.

Here's my current issue.

I've looked into my student loan debts, and currently I owe (with interest) about $10,200 (available credit of 13k) - however, the collection agency going after my student loans is reporting that I owe just over $26,000 to all the credit reporting agencies. This is inaccurate information. I want to pay what I legally owe, but at the same time, I don't want this smear on my credit showing that I owe more than twice my available credit.

I'm wondering what my options are, my guesses are ...

1) Hire a firm to remove the inaccurate information and then pay the actual debt owed

2) contact the collection agency and kindly ask them to remove the inaccurate information, and make payment arrangements to get my debt's "rehabbed"

3) find a way to just pay the amount owed directly to the department of education and skip the collection agency all together, THEN hire some type of firm to remove all the negative stuff from my credit reports.

not really sure what I can do here, I know that government agencies are somewhat immune to the FDCPA laws, simply because government guaranteed loans end up costing the taxpayers money, so that puts them somewhat above the law.

I'm not looking to "Get out" of these loans, or "Avoid paying" them, I just want to pay the accurate amounts.

Yeah, I've been a deadbeat for too long - I've been researching these student loans for months, trying to learn the law to see what my rights are, but I'm stumped.

and for the record, I don't see why people try to insult "Debtcollector" so often, as I see it, he doesn't beat 'round the bush, he just tells you how it is (with humor!)

Of the options you suggested this is the best one. However, I have a suggestion or two.
Is the lender Sallie Mae?
1. Call Sallie Mae or log in through the web site and look at the itemized loan info.
2. Explain you hardship to Sallie Mae and ask about programs to get you back on track.
3. Adhere to the agreement religiously.

Looks like everything is being done through EAC right now ... in Aberdeen, SD - I've got an email off to them - Hopefully they can get me a response, of ANY kind - whether it's to call or otherwise.

As for Sallie Mae - I checked their website, they have no records of my loans ... humm ...

Tomorrow will be FULL of phone calls. Including lookin' for a new job. Damn cold minnesota winter layoffs.
