What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

A girl immigrated from scottand on a student visa. She had a job as an independant contractor and her boss just went out of bussiness so she got the fired. Now she can't afford to pay for her classes for spring. I am not 100% sure on the details but I don't think she has a social security number or tax id so she can only do independant contractor work, which limits her options.

She said she would like to go back to scottland briefly and then return to the usa, but she is worried that she will be banned because she left the country while "out of status" since she is no longer studing. She is running out of money and has to figure out what to do soon.

Any ideas on how I could help her

As a side note she is worried when she goes in for her liscense the dmv will check with the college and find out she is no longer studying there.

If she is really here on a student visa, she is not even permitted to work except as authorized by her school and in very limited settings during the school year.

As for paying for her classes, she would have only gotten the student visa if she could have shown to the satisfaction of the school and the consular officer that she either had funds to pay for the tuition and other school expenses or had a sponsor.

As a side note I have been helping her practice driving, and she is worried when she goes in for her liscense the dmv will check with the college and find out she is no longer studying there.

Any ideas on how to help her? Pay for her classes.
Beyond that, why should somebody who is here on a STUDENT visa be allowed to remain while not a STUDENT?

And, as a point of clarification. If your Scottish friend does not have a valid Social Security number (or valid substitute), then she cannot work in the US legally, whether as an employee OR an "independent contractor".
