I have just been made aware of a debt that occured almost 7 years ago. Here in Rhode Island the SOL is 10 years for a debt. I also have a resendince in Mass and the SOL is 6 years. The Debt was also created in Mass. This whole thing is strange I bought a computer 6 years ago and tried to return it 10 days after I bought it and they said I could not because it was a Spiecal deal. I left the computer at there location and never heard from them until now. I am not sure what I should do this credit attorney had served me 11 days ago and it says I have 20 day to contact him or a judgement can be made against me. I am wondering about the Summons cause across the middle it is has this printed across the middle: I AM A DEBT COLLECTOR. THIS IS AN ATTEMPT TO COLLECT A DEBT, AND ANY INFORMATION OBTAINED WILL BE USED FOR THAT PURPOSE.

There is no File number and no Seal from the district court. But it does say State of Rhode Island on the top and it looks like the Plainiff is a credit service and I am typed in as the defendant.

Most likely, the computer store sold the delinquent account, since you said they don't have a judgment against you, and the "collection agency or attorney" is attempting to collect the debt.

Your options are: contact the atty and see what they are up to? do they have a judgment, if so, ask to see the judgment papers, were you served, exactly what is going on?
If you are willing you can make a payment deal with him or yet another option is, if they in fact don't have a judgment against you, you can sit and wait for judgment notice papers to get sent to you.

At any rate, your credit rating will probably be affected if this doesn't get resolved in a timely manner.

I hope I understood correctly that there is no judgment against you. Again, I also don't know the laws in your state. Plus, if the debt started in one state and you live in another now, they can get a judgment in the state that it originated in.
