What is the name of your state? CA

My children's father is requesting the court change our children's surnames. We have two children: 11 years old and 4 mos old.

Has anyone ever experienced a judge changing a childs last name after 11 years? Aside from psychological ramifications - I can't imagine the nightmare of paperwork that would be included in this, especially for the 11 year old. School records, immunization records, social security, banks, mutual funds, savings bonds, beneficiary info etc.. Even the 4 month old has savings bonds, life insurance beneficiary info, social security info. Not to mention all the personal engraved & handcrafted heirlooms with their given names on them!

My children are 13 and almost 11 and they just got their surname changed this past summer. There was very little to do actually. I notified the schools and showed the adoption papers and as far as school that's all we needed. The board of health will reissue birth certificates more then likely or else the paperwork would be enough to get SS cards changed and just contact doctors and such, it really is no big deal. The kids have really done the transition well.

Honestly, except in an adoption situation a judge is highly unlikely to change a child's name after 11 years....IF one of the parents is opposed to the change. The are far more likely to change the name of an infant, however since the infant isn't the only child involved it may be different.

I know of kids that age who have changed their surname as part of an adoption. Actually, many also changed their first name too, because they wanted an "american" sounding name when they shed their birthnames.

My hubby has his name changed at age 13 when his stepdad adopted him (biodad had died before his birth) and it caused him no trauma.

And, come to think of it, I changed my name 8 years ago after living with the other name for a really long time. I also had savings, securities, CDs, retirement plans, a house, etc. in the previous surname.
