I am a member of an ambulance corps in New York. I was suspended today by the captain for a quote that I have on my myspace page. The quote on my page has been there for a few weeks and to be honest, its quite tasteless, but its not directed at any one person. The quote is simply there due to an inside joke with some friends that are firefighters. A member of the ambulance corps who I have had problems with in the past complained to our captain about it. Today I was suspended for it and I feel like its wrong. Do they have a right to suspend me for something on my page that has nothing to do with the ambulance corps? It just doesnt seem right..

It depends. Is the ambulance corps a private company or a government entity? If private, does it get government funding?

They corps is private and does not get government funding. The corps is run by its own administation and set of by-laws. They seem to make rules up as the go.. Its not run very well.

In that case, they can suspend you for whatever reason they choose, short of illegal discrimination.

I dont believe that to be true. We operate under a set of by-laws. The by-laws have nothing in them regarding this kind of problem. You cant make rules up as you go.. I consulted an attorney and they do not have a right to suspend me. But thanks anyway
