my 23 yr old son has received SSDI benefits....(not much only $5,000) for the year. he did not work and can not work. he is dying from lung cancer. Does he have to file income tax on the money he received from SSDI?

SSDI monthly payments. When figuring out what’s taxable, SSDI payments are treated like regular Social Security payments and reported to you on Form SSA-1099. So in general, up to 50 percent of your benefits may be taxable each year, plus all your other income (including tax-exempt interest).

What other income has your son had? If this is it, then chances are slim. Are YOU going to be taking the child as a dependent?

There are a number of agencies that can do taxes for free. You might want to consult with one.

If that is his only income, then he does not have to file a tax return and if you are supporting him, then you can claim him as a dependent.

If he had other income (and it sounds like he did not) then come back here and tell us how much other income he had for 2008.
