Teen brings handgun to school for use in skit
By GREG WELTER - Staff Writer

Police investigated reports Friday that a Chico High student brought a handgun to school with the permission of a teacher, and that his mother also knew he had it.

An unloaded weapon described as a .380-caliber, semi-automatic pistol was located by officers in a classroom early Friday morning and confiscated.

Principal Jim Hanlon said a miscommunication between the youth, said to be in the 10th grade, and an unidentified teacher led the student to believe he could use the handgun as a prop in a classroom skit.

The youth's name is being withheld because of his age.

Hanlon said the class was presenting contemporary versions of Shakespearean plays, and the gun was to be used in a scene from "Macbeth" with a Mafia-style twist.

"I don't think he had the gun for any other reason except to use it as a prop," said Hanlon, who emphasized that administrators didn't know the weapon was on campus until police were called.

The youth reportedly brought the gun to school on Thursday, but another actor in the skit wasn't there that day, and it was postponed until Friday.

On each occasion, the boy carried the gun onto campus in a backpack, said police Sgt. Scott Franssen.

He reportedly turned it over to a teacher early Friday morning, who placed it on a classroom shelf along

with other props for the skits.

An unidentified person spotted the gun in the classroom and called police.

Franssen said the youth was intercepted by officers on campus before class began, and he was reportedly honest about bringing the gun to school and the reason it was there.

However, Franssen said a switchblade knife, also allegedly intended as a prop, was found during a search of the youth and confiscated. He was cited for possession of concealed weapons and later released to the custody of his parents.

Hanlon said the school and the police are each conducting investigations into the incident. The principal said he didn't know if the school district would take disciplinary action against the student.

Franssen said the teacher who allegedly gave the youth permission to bring the gun and several of the boy's classmates have been interviewed regarding the incident.

California ... where students sue (and win) to get an injunction preventing a state-mandated high school exit exam from taking place ... an exam that is considered to be at the 8th grade level in most subjects and that students have 5 chances to pass.

Combine that with the fact that the state may now forbid the mention of "mom", "dad" and traditional two parent families in text books, I foresee a MASS exodus to private schools in the next few years.

(Sorry ... rant mode off ...)

When I was in high school I took a 1917 Remington bayonet to school to use as a prop. One of my friends took a compound bow to use as a prop.

I posted the original thread about this.
A newspaper article is a source to glean information out of but not neccessarily fact.
I say again, there was no miscommunication. The teacher sent a note home with the boy saying it was okay.
I saw the original note and it has been validated to be true and signed by the teacher.
He now has a criminal defense attorney.

And when I was a kid, we used to bring our shotguns to school, put them in our lockers and go pheasant hunting after school. Alot of the teachers knew.
Eventually the principal told us to keep them off campus from then on.
Ahhh the good old days!

Also, when I was the boys age, everyone who went to Mexico brought back switch blades for the kids. We would just play with them until the springs wore out.

I realize you posted the original thread and that the newspaper doesn't necessiarly have all the facts, however there are many similarities between your thread which was posted before the ChicoER story was veted and printed. There was some delay in printing the story because the paper has to confirm some of the facts and then they must be careful is the language they use, thus the word "miscommunication" was used as opposed to reference to the note. You wil note, as I told you on your thread, that he needed a criminal defense attorney and that his name wouldn't be used because he is a minor, getting the article in the press may have helped him more than harmed him in that it forces the school administraiton to become accountable for their actions and also helps establish evidence in any future litigation both criminal and civil.
