Your thread was locked before I could respond to some statements you made.

You said in your thread: "...the reality is we all love to watch trainwreck lives as they happen. That makes great TV .." and "... story's that have issues which are dark, and chime with peoples personal faults are invariably more successful than the warm and fuzzy ones ..."

That is actually not as true as you may think, at least based on the ratings/rankings of network TV programs.

I know several people who work in the entertainment industry, including some who work in television, and the types of shows they look for but that are often hard to find, are the warm and fuzzy, "Hallmark" card, "The Fault in Our Stars" type of shows. These tend to draw in viewers far more than the "dark" stories that center on people's faults.

For a look at the top 50 broadcast TV shows for 2013-2014 (Entertainment Weekly) and full season series rankings (Deadline Hollywood), here are links to give you an idea of what shows network TV producers want the most because TV viewers watch them the most:

A script should be treated like any new product. Before spending a lot of time and effort into the creation of the product and introducing it to the public, it is important to research the market to see what consumers are buying and what they are not. It can be your advance research into the market that could help you create a script that a producer wants and is willing to invest in.
