What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Georgia- I have a friend that was in a bad, abusive relationship and in an altercation with this man ended up having to stab him in order to protect herself. He didn't die right away, but in surgery to repair his wound. The courts convinced her not to go to trial, but to take a plea bargin and was sentenced to ten years for man slaughter. She wrote the court recently trying to appeal and they told her that the other parties involved in the case (the man's wife) would have to agree first before any more actions could take place. What I want to know is how the courts can convict a woman with no prior criminal or violent history that was merely trying to save her own life from a man with a violent history?!Why would they not recommend a trial for her,and is there anything at all I can do to help her with a sentence reduction?...Thank you in advance for any suggestions. What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?
