Tx/Age of Freedom?

Hi, 17 yr. old male-Tx, I have read about Emancipation and read the Tx statutes..My parents won't go for Eman..and I will be 18 in just a few months-4 Actually..It seems like the closer I get to moving out, the harder it gets around here..I was wondering if anyone knew the age that a minor can leave in Tx..Ive talked to quite a few people and half say 17, and half say 18- Also, if I were to leave, what can possibly happen? Thanks a lot..

My response:

At 17, you're still a minor. Forget about emancipation because, and besides the fact that your parents won't go for it, you're too close to the age of majority, which is 18.

If you decide to move out now, your parents can have the police drag you back home anyway. So, keep your hormones in check, and stick it out. Adulthood is just around the corner - - and believe me, it's a rougher ride than it is for you right now - - and, it's permanent.

Just a note in response to your message about the police being able to drag him home at 17 - the police told us this weekend (our son ran away and is 17) that they cannot forcibly bring him home nor take him to juvenile detention, since he's 17 yrs. old (state of Texas).

If a kid chooses to leave at 17, parents can't do anything unless they emancipate him legally. If they emancipate him, they aren't held responsible for his food, shelter, clothes, etc.
